IIT hosts German students on study trip
A STAFF REPORTER Dec. 13: A weeklong Indo-German Winter Academy took
off at IIT Guwahati this evening with the idea of bringing students from
respective institutions to collaborate and share ideas for a better learning
environment.
Six students from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and three
professors have arrived in the city. This is the second time that IIT Guwahati
is hosting the event, the first being in 2003.
The Winter Academy, a joint effort between the Indian Institutes of
Technology and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, was started in 2002 with
the objective of motivating talented undergraduate students from the two
institutions to the challenging problems of science and engineering.
“The focus of the Academy is not only learning about contemporary research
issues but also to promote a greater understanding of the social and cultural
context. The selected students for the Academy are assigned a seminar topic
beforehand and provided with guidance through a group of research mentors,” an
IIT official said.
He said during the Academy, the students and the professors assemble and hold
seminar talks. Each student gives lecture on his/ her own topic that was
assigned to him/her.
Other students and professors interact with the speaker in an intense manner
and address all relevant issues starting from basic theoretical aspects to
final application. “We also feel proud to host it as it also gives us a chance
to show off our institute and the kind of facilities we have,” the official
said.
