Magh Bihu celebrated in Scotland
GUWAHATI, Jan 20 – As the fervour of Magh Bihu gripped the people of the
State, the Assamese youth and their families residing in Scotland also took the
opportunity to get together and keep the spirit of Bihu alive far away from
their homeland, according to an e-mail report received here.

On January 14, several youths from different parts of Scotland including, East
Kilbirde, Edinburgh and different locations of Glassgow, assembled together to
celebrate Bhogali Bihu.

The day started with the youth searching different shops for buying the
foodstuff and ingredients to prepare Assamese food.

In the evening, everybody was involved in cooking the Assamese cuisines like
fish tenga, pigeon roast, duck roast and preparing narikal laru and even tilor
laru.

Different competitions among the revelers also marked the celebrations. The
koni juj (egg fight) was won by Debashish Deka. He received a tray of duck eggs.

An Assamese costume competition was also organised, which was won by Sarfaraz
of Edinburgh. Nirmalya Kalita and Gaurav Pathak won prizes in Bihu song
competitions.

The festivities were organised by Jahnavi and Bishnu Pathak near George Square.
The day’s celebrations ended with dinner in traditional Assamese way on kolpaat
(plantain leaf).

Next morning, the families shared bihuaan among themselves.
