IPL kicked off with the players auction today .
Skilfully orchestrated by international sports agency IMG and Modi,
commissioner of the IPL and a vice-president of the BCCI, the competition is a
masterpiece of marketing. Before a ball has been bowled the IPL has raised $
1.8bn(US) in revenue and sent tremors through the international game.
Dhoni,Yuvraj,Sachin,Dravid ,symonds booked for million dollars. Gen X players
like Ishant Sharma, Rohit, RP Singh and rest of the gang benefiting from this
gold rush as well.Foreign players from Australia,,Pak,WI,SL,NZ will earn 3
times more then what they are currently per year in just 40 days playing for
IPL. The business model for BCCI looks pretty much like aaamerikaan
NBA/NFL. money spinning -

TV rights: $918 million US
Promotional rights: $108 million US
Title sponsorship rights: $50 million US
Team rights: $723.5 million US
The real challenge will be one creating a massive following on the ground on
which they operate. The fundamental to the success is, can they get the people
to come on the ground and watch. It's not about the TRPs, you need to get the
local crowd. That's when you do merchandising, in stadia rights. You start to
sell many other products and sponsors and get them into the play. The real game
for the franchises is the capital, appreciation of the franchise value.
Right here in Aaaamerika we see how its played out in NFL/NBA/major league
Baseball and Hockey. But ultimately, this is a game show and however big the
promise of the spectacle is, in the end game, returns will depend on how many
eyeballs and how much money is put in by advertisers. ************** this
