Job fair for BPO aspirants
A STAFF REPORTER March 2: National Association of Software and Service
Companies (Nasscom), the premier trade body and “voice” of the IT software and
service industry in India, will soon be in the city for its first job fair.
Union minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh said on Saturday that the
premier body has arranged a job fair in the city for all those students from
Assam who took the Nasscom Assessment of Competence (NAC) test last December.
The fair will be held on March 15 and 16.
A total of 2,581 students from all over Assam took the test and they will get
a chance to interact with the top BPOs from all over the country, which will be
participating in the fair.
The job fair is a result of the MoU signed between Nasscom and DoNER on July
10 last year.
“At least the companies will know the skill and aptitude of the students as
they have taken the test based on some set standards,” an industry official
said.
Ramesh said there is an abundance of talent in the region, which can be the
cutting edge for the high growth BPO industry. “The region over the years has
emerged as an important source for suitable and industry-ready talent. The
students in the northeastern region have good written and verbal communication
skills, which makes the region a very attractive pool for recruitment in the
BPO industry,” he said.
The NAC test was launched as an industry standard assessment and
certification programme to ensure the transformation of a “trainable” workforce
into an “employable workforce” thus creating a robust and continuous pool of
talent for the BPO sector.
The target candidates are the final-year students who will venture into the
job markets after a year’s time.
Ramesh said the city can make it to the top IT cities and can take a
considerable share in the IT exports. At present, seven cities share 95 per
cent of the IT exports and it is time that the narrow geographical base be
broadened.
Sources said with the entry of TCS it would not be long that others would
follow suit.
“Finally, the IT companies will invest here instead of only recruiting,”
Ramesh said.
The key benefits of the NAC test for job aspirants is that it adopts a
common, transparent process across companies in the ITES-BPO sector and the
ability to identify their strengths and weaknesses and self-assess training
needs.
