SHILLONG, March 27: The North-east is experiencing a sharp increase in women
trafficking. The trend is high in this region as most of the young girls become
easy prey of organized syndicates which promise them lucrative jobs in the
metropolitan cities, said Impulse NGO Network team leader Hasina Kharbhih.
“The situation is alarming with smart operators flooding the region hunting for
good-looking young girls for modelling assignments or jobs in call centres with
good salaries. However, the dungeons of prostitution is where they are pushed
into,” Kharbhih said at a joint meeting between the law-enforcing agencies and
NGOs here on Wednesday.

“The North-east is a place where women are given almost equal status with
men, yet it is also a place where the crime against women is very high,” said
Hasina, and added: “Poor and illiterate girls are trafficked into cities.
However, Impulse will work ceaselessly in rescuing women trafficked from the
region in association with the respective State NGOs.”
Attended by State police and Border Security Force personnel, the meeting also
drew a conclusion that India is not just a route for trafficking but also a
source and destination at the same time. Collective responsibility and
strategies to be taken by NGOs, and police and security personnel were also
dwelt at length at the meeting.

Deliberating on the issue, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
North East Coordinator Dr Pushkar Singh said that post offices would be used in
coordinating of information in the region soon. He also said trafficking has to
be tackled by educating people at the grass-roots level, and that post offices
will be a good agency since they can reach out to every corner.
While urging the law-enforcing agencies not to criminalize the trafficked
persons, Dr Pushkar, called upon the society to work collectively to curb
crimes against women.

Assistant Public Affairs Officer of the American Center, Kolkata, Moulik D
Berkana said that women should be given utmost care and protection, especially
as March is observed as the Month of Women all over the world. He also called
upon each and every citizen to celebrate the month by giving women their right
to live free from exploitation of all forms. “This is a big problem, but then
we face difficulties in busting such rackets due to lack of information of the
girls or the people involved in such operations,” said Asom IGP (Crime) G
Bhuyan.
