Former Ranji player dead

 GUWAHATI, April 9 — Former State Ranji player Arup Sarma died at a local 
hospital here today.

Sarma, who played three Ranji trophy matches for Assam in the 1998-99 season, 
scored 83 in five innings with 46 being the highest against Bihar. He also took 
two wickets against Orissa with his leg-spinners.

The 38-year-old cricketer was an employee of the NF Railway. He was also an 
active member of Ankurjyoti Club and Nabarang Club of the city and was 
associated with several social organisations of the Uzan Bazar locality. He was 
the secretary of Sanskriti Sangha.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) president Gautam Roy, secretary Bikash 
Baruah, GB member Niloy Dutta along with all the members have condoled the 
death of Sarma.

The former Ranji cricketer sustained a head injury in a road mishap on Saturday 
night and was admitted to a local hospital. ACA officials Bikash Baruah, 
Ghanashyam Baruah, Rajesh Bora and Dilip Nandi yesterday visited Sarma at the 
hospital and provided some financial assistance for his treatment. He however 
succumbed to his injury.

Other organisations like River Rine Club, Veteran Cricket Association of Assam, 
GSA, Ankurjyoti Club and a host of sportspersons like Rana Goswami and Rajesh 
Bora condoled the untimely death of Sarma.

He leaves behind his wife and a minor son.

  Arup aka Dabba was a very jovial character and great team man. A great loss 
for not only his family but all sports lovers of Guwahati. A seasoned performer 
of Ankurjyoti, he also shone for NFR. May his soul rest in peace.
