============================== New on the Site Sharpening Your Skills:
Thinking About Global http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5883.html
Are global brands effective? Which countries are the most business friendly?
How can my foreign assets be protected? Here are some recent Working Knowledge
articles on thinking about the global business.

Going Negative in Political Advertising http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5937.html
Companies rarely run negative ads against competitors, but political
candidates often do. Why the difference? It's a byproduct of our political
system's winner-take-all approach, says professor John Quelch.

Working paper: Testing Strategy with Multiple Performance Measures Evidence
from a Balanced Scorecard at Store24 http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5919.html
Download the PDF. To what extent do balanced scorecards provide useful
information for testing and validating an organization's strategy? There has
been comparatively little research on the potential learning and feedback role
of balanced scorecards. Analyzing balanced scorecard data from Store24—a
privately held convenience store retailer in New England—during the
implementation of an innovative but ultimately unsuccessful strategy, this
study by Dennis Campbell, Srikant M. Datar, Susan L. Kulp, and V.G. Narayanan
investigates whether, when, and how information about problems with the firm's
strategy was captured in the multiple performance measures of its balanced
scorecard.

First Look: New Research by HBS Faculty http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5936.html
New in publications and case studies: Does bargaining at home affect
bargaining at companies when gender is a factor? ... From humble beginnings to
international IPO, a microfinance institution faces the future ... Should an
exec come out of the closet at work?

What Do You Think? What is the Future of State Capitalism?
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5928.html
Online forum OPEN until Thursday, May 29. Whatever happened to the fears not
long ago that global corporations with allegiance to no government would
challenge the world economic order? These days, state-owned corporations now
dwarf even the largest privately-owned global organizations, says HBS professor
Jim Heskett. What is the impact on competition? What do you think?

Best of Faculty Q&As The Key to Managing Stars? Think Team
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5617.html
Stars don't shine alone. As Harvard Business School's Boris Groysberg and
Linda-Eling Lee reveal in new research, it is imperative that top performers as
well as their managers take into account the quality of colleagues. Groysberg
and Lee explain the implications for star mobility and retention in this Q&A
from 2007.
