State importing fish worth Rs 100 cr

GUWAHATI, July 16 – The State could produce 1.9 lakh MTs of fish against an
annual demand of 2.1 lakh MTs and the State is importing fish worth Rs 100
crore annually from other states of the country, said Fisheries Minister
Nurjamal Sarkar in reply to a question of Ananta Deka (CPI-M). The State has
launched new schemes for raising its own fish production. These include a Rs 3
crore scheme to develop the water bodies engaging the self- help groups, a Rs
57 lakh scheme for prawn nurseries, a Rs 4.2 lakh scheme for release of
fingerlings in the natural water bodies, a Rs 25 lakh scheme for prawn
hatcheries, a Rs 15 lakh scheme for setting up a factory for fish feed
production, the Minister said.
The State Government has also made arrangements to produce fingerlings of the
local species of fishes like the magur, sol, pava, chital, cheni puthi etc at
its Ulubari fish spawn production centre.
It has set up four eco- hatcheries in the public sector and extended help for
setting up 12 private sector hatcheries of the same nature with modern
technologies to raise fish production in the State. It has also been holding
fish festivals and extending help to the fish farmers besides, organising
trainings for these farmers, said the Minister.
