Citizens demand redrafting of Guwahati Master Plan

Guwahati, July 18: A Citezens' meet here today demanded redrafting of the
proposed Guwahati Master Plan with inorporation of suggestions put forward by
various citizens' committees in the city..

Organised by the Journalists' Forum, Assam at the Guwahati Press Club, the meet
demanded an immediate survey of the green belt and and eco-sensitive areas of
the city, which should cover the entire gamut of issues including citizenship
and economic status.

Presided over by JFA president Rupam Baruah, the meet asked the authorities to
reduce the pressure of water on the Bharalu river. They pleaded that the
Shilsako beel be reclaimed and the storm-water from catchment areas of the beel
be redirected to the beel itself. They advocated construction of a storm-water
drain along the National Highway 37 so that the flow of storm-water from
Meghalaya can be directed to the Deepar beel.

Demanding preservation of all wetlands and low-lying areas of the city, the
citizens requested the authorities to ensure planned development of hillocks
and use of earth from the Brahmaputra instead of earth from the hills for
earth-filling.

Addressed among others by activists like Subodh Sarma, Dhanjit Kakati, Ashim
Chartejee, Pranita Sarma, Colonel P. C. Choudhury, Benu Baruah, Kishore Giri,
