A big hoax

Sir, – Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has recently announced that extra seats would
be provided from the current academic session in the two Engineering Colleges
of the State to compensate the reduction of quota in the NITs by the Government
of India. The aspiring students as well as their parents were much relieved at
the CM’s announcement. People at large were also happy at the decision of the
Government.
The news item ‘CM’s announcement creates confusion’ (AT, July 24) really
created confusion in the minds of the students and their parents. In the same
news item, it was described how two mothers from Nalbari came with their sons
to the counselling centre as Guwahati and were totally disappointed when they
were told that no such arrangement could be made this year. The Director of
Technical Education was reported to have told the staff reporter that for seat
enhancement, approval of State Government, AICTE and the respective
universities were needed, Now the question arises as to how the CM made the
announcement without verifying the legalities involved ? Was the DTE not
consulted by the CM’s office prior to the announcement ? If at all the DTE was
consulted, did he mislead the CM? All these probabilities are haunting the
minds of the citizens. Will the CM’s office clarify for the benefit of the
students, their parents and the people at large.
 – Yours etc., BIRESH CH DAS, Bharalumukh, Guwahati.
