Upgrading textile institute

SIR, – Much ado is raised on the mass exodus of the students each year from
Assam for higher education. But strangely enough the government has not taken
any concrete measures to arrest this exodus. The students cannot but go outside
the State to study certain subjects as these subjects are not offered in the
educational institutions of Assam. There are more than 200 course names in the
engineering course. But the engineering colleges of Assam offer only a few
traditional courses. The government should take steps for introducing new
courses in the existing engineering colleges instead of opening more
engineering colleges with traditional courses. The Assam Textile Institute,
situated near Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati offers untraditional job oriented
subjects like Fashion Technology, Garment Technology and Textile Technology.
But as there is provision to study upto diploma level only, the students have
to go outside for studying B Tech and M Tech in
these subjects. So the government of Assam should take immediate steps to
upgrade this Textile Institute upto first B Tech then to M Tech level with
improvement of infrastructure. This will contribute a lot in removing a long
felt need.– Yours etc., SANGEET BORA, Beltola, Guwahati.
