I-Day celebrated at press club

As usual, the journalists and citizens of Guwahati have celebrated country’s
Independence Day at Guwahati Press Club. Defying the diktat of militants, who
called for a 15 hour general strike staring from the early hours of August 15,
the group of patriotic people assembled at the press club premises for the
occasion.

The National flag was hoisted by the renowned journalist-writer  Nirupama
Borgohain at 11 am. In her brief speech, she insisted on observing both I-day
and Republic Day (of India) to pay tribute to the martyrs of freedom movement.
The Sahitya Academy  awardee also condemned the secessionist militants for
using
diktats to the people not to observe the Days under any banner.

Addressing the gathering, eminent journalist DN Chakrabarty elaborated the
contribution of martyrs to make India an independent nation. The former editor
of Dainik Asom emphasized on making the country as a role model for everyone.
He
appealed all sections of the society to come forward for contributing in the
growth of the nation.

Criticizing the armed groups of the country for maintaining terror and
violence,
the veteran journalist urged the young generation to work for a new India,
where
governance and justice will be accessible for every common Indian. Chakrabarty
out rightly rejected the demand for a sovereign Assam (out of India) and
appealed the militants to come forward for peace negotiations.

Later the participants took out a procession in the city streets chanting
patriotic slogans. Some of the journalists also performed patriotic songs in an
informal cultural show at the press club campus.
