                      GUWAHATI, Sep 2:
 ‘Dhemaji Utsav’, or Festival of Dhemaji will be celebrated on January 
9, 10 and 11, 2011 at Rong Sotiuwa ground at the district headquarters, 
announced president Dr Budhindra Baruah and general secretary Muhi 
Borgohain of the celebration committee at a press conference here 
today.  The festival aims at strengthening the bond of amity among 
people from various ethnic groups who live in Dhemaji district, said the
 celebration committee office bearers. 
Objectives of the proposed 
celebrations also include promotion of tourism and folk culture in the 
district. The festival would draw attention to the need  for 
preservation of natural resources, historical sites, various components 
of folk culture, cottage industries, horticulture and sericulture, said a
 press statement by the celebration committee office bearers Besides, 
Dhemaji festival will initiate steps like seminars and workshops in a 
bid to promote and present the indigenous culture at a wider level.
It
 is also stated that Dhemaji is inhabited by people who are well-known 
for some delicious recipe; these recipe, after proper scientific 
studies, deserve to be introduced at the world market, said Baruah and 
Bargohain. 
The three-day Dhemaji festival will be preceded by book 
release function and trade fair  on January 8. People from 65 village 
panchayats will take part in the inaugural function on January 9. Apart 
from highlighting different ethnic groups such as Santhal, Mising, 
Deori, Sonowal Kachari, Rabha, Bengali, Koch Rajbongshi, Rajasthani, 
Tea-tribes and others in the cultural show, teams comprising of 
sportspersons, senior citizens and different professions are scheduled 
to take part.
