‘I’m a simple man, not an artiste’

GUWAHATI, Sept 5: “I don’t consider myself as an artiste. I am a simple man – a
man who can admit his mistakes while others can also criticize them,” said
noted
artiste Khagen Mahanta while speaking as the “Guest of the Month” of the
Guwahati Press Club today.
Khagen Mahanta’s wife Archana Mahanta, another popular artiste, also attended
the programme as the “Guest of the Month” of the Guwahati Press Club. The two
artistes were felicitated with a gamosa and a japi each.
In his speech, Khagen Mahanta said, “Today most singers do not sing positive
songs. They are busy seeking publicity. I love to sing positive songs and show
our problems to the people through my songs. For this, I have enjoyed love and
affection in villages and other areas. I have also faced bad criticism.” He
remarked that people got emotional during the Assam Agitation that had not
helped the State in any way.
“People had become emotional during the Assam Agitation. The  economic
condition
of the people of the State had turned bad during that period. I wanted to
highlight those problems through my songs for which I was targeted.”
“The Assam Agitation benefited a handful of leaders and not Assam,” said the
artiste.
Khagen Mahanta said as a child he was not interested so much in singing.
