Rich in energy, water, and mineral resources, it is also emerging as a key infrastructure corridor linking the Middle East to China and Central Asia to the Indian Ocean rim. The past decade has witnessed both growing national ambitions and expanding cross-border investment in energy and infrastructure projects throughout this critical zone. Sustainable development of the Himalayan region’s natural resources could offer important economic benefits as well as significant opportunities for enhanced regional cooperation in this troubled area of the world. Yet current resource extraction and infrastructure plans and projects raise an array of political, security, and economic questions as well as a host of environmental concerns. Please join us on Wednesday, 27 July 2011 as we host a distinguished panel of experts to discuss “Resources on the Roof of the World: International Politics and Sustainable Development in the Greater Himalayan Region.” Panelists: Tufail Ahmad, Middle East Media Research Institute Sumit Ganguly, Indiana University Syed Iqbal Hasnain, The Stimson Center David Michel, The Stimson Center Mike Penders, Environmental Security International Senge Sering, The Institute for Gilgit Baltistan Studies Light refreshments will be served following the discussions. *** Please RSVP by 26 July to Mr. Corey Sobel at [email protected] If you no longer wish to receive these emails, please reply to this message with "Unsubscribe" in the subject line or simply click on the following link: Unsubscribe The Henry L.
