@Uddipana:
Good to hear that its available in the stores in Assam. My sis tells me
she heard a lot of Assamese singers on Coke Studio. Unfortunately I
haven't found the time to watch TV presently.
We certainly have talented people, and am pretty sure we will have more
of them irrespective of whether Bollywood promotes them or not.

Dear Friends,
I am not regular on this list. But I do subscribe to the list and have been
privy to the interesting discussions here on topics related to Assam.
In this context, I wanted to mention a few words about Joi Barua. I am not
sure if he has been mentioned here before, but his music is reason enough to
do it once more, even if it were repetitive. I first saw his name on the
Music CD of the movie - Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. He has been active in the
Bollywood world for some time now, though more as a sidekick than as the
main singer. There is some write up in wikipedia on him which I am sure all
of you can look up easily.
That’s not the reason I want to mention him here. He has released an
Assamese rock album somewhere in Dec 2010/Jan 2011. I am not sure if
everyone would appreciate the music ...but to me it certainly is refreshing.
The music is good and the lyrics make sense. I don't remember any Indian
singing in a non-English language to music that is decidedly western!! Maybe
Rock on had some music of this sort, but those were by bigwigs from
Bollywood. So this is lovely and deserves applause. The album has
unfortunately been released in the internet as MP3 songs. Obviously they do
not have the backing of a big music label. To make it worse the music is
available on Amazon MP3 store, but cannot be purchased by Indians.
Fortunately for me I use the Ubuntu OS and was able to purchase the music
through Ubuntu One Music Store. I don't use Apple itunes, but if I am not
wrong music in iTunes is also not available for purchase by Indians.
I wish I could tell everyone to buy the album. If you stay outside India,
please do buy this album. For those of us in India if you want to hear him
out there is a way out. You can visit google.co.in/music and search for
Joi Barua and hear him belt out Hindi songs. Couple of his songs and an
official video is also available for viewing in youtube.
