Dear Netters

After the announcement of the various school final and post-school examination
results in Assam, it appeared that the State did not have sufficient places for
many of those successful candidates. Then there were those  hundreds of failed
students who would have possibly discontinued their studies seeking employment.
I suggested the alternative of distance learning for those who wanted to learn
while they earned.
After going through an article in the Guardian yesterday (20 07 2011)HOW to get
ahead in …. (guardian.co.uk/housing-network),  I feel Government of India ought
to start a National Apprentice Service (NAS) like the UK one, if such a body is
not already in place in India. I do not know how a subject like housing is
administered both under the Union and State governments  but something like the
National Apprentice Service is a sin qua non. Particulars of this service can
be browsed over straightway from Google.

Years ago the Assam Oil Company at Digboi ran an excellent apprenticeship
scheme both for graduates and undergraduates. I do not know what is the present
state of these invaluable institutions. Before nationalisation of the company,
a few of the apprentices (non-graduates) were sent for training abroad and
after their return they became Indian Assistants (known  also as Covenanted
staff). It appears after nationalisation also a few of the non-graduate
apprentices also were able to secure lucrative jobs just as the graduates
normally do.
