1981, I was a student of Engineering. Sikhaba was a journalist with National Herald. We nomadic students, all and sundry, used to visit their house anytime for 'adda' and hearty meals at 24 BD Estate, where Deepaba (Now Regional Director , Tourism, Guwahati) and Hemantada (Profy at Ramjas) were available 24x7 with smiles. There was Sharat (Indian Army Officer) and Sanjay(IT guy). Soon after Sikhaba got married to Mr Balaji Teeka, a Marine Engineer from Rajasthan. I met them over lunch, and that was the last tate-a-tate with them, they were moving to Singapore.
Off and on we have been exchanging notes, and learnt that they have started a Shipping Management Company with 14 ships in 1998. This has grown to 142 ships now. They soon realised that unless they have an inhouse maritime training institute the core business will not run. So came "Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies" at Lonavala, amidst picturesque Western Ghats. They have a target to manage 200 ships by 2015 AD and proportionate increase in manpower recruitment and trainees in SIMS. Thats a huge success from a First Generation Entrepreneur. Any regrets- yes, youth from Assam is not taking advantage of the training facility, which in 10 years time can fetch upto $10000 per month in salary. I thought I should share this story of a girl from from Guwahati making waves in Singapore.
