Dear Netters:
Having been inspired by a medical report, I posted an email on 23
August last to highlight the fact that an Unhappy Marriage Is Better
Than Being Single. Here in UK as an elderly member of our microscopic
Assamese community, I lamented that most of our young men and young
women are single. They are healthy and handsome, UK’s red-brick
graduates and are professionals earning good money. As the saying goes,
the world is their oysters.
I need not have worried. The Economist last week (August 20th-26th
2011) devoted a couple of leaders on the subject of Asia’s Lonely
Hearts. These articles are in-depth dissertations explaining why Asian
women are rejecting marriage and what that means;. that Asians are
marrying later, and less, than in the past. This has profound
implications for women, traditional family life and Asian politics.
