Hi,
I enjoyed the write up on the living bridges of Meghalaya.  Recently (last
March) two of my good friends from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois visited that
bridge, and I heard about it for the first time from them (I am hoping to visit
that bridge during my next visit to Assam).  My friends went to Meghalaya to
visit a self help unit in Nangthalang in West Jayantia Hills.  Nangthalang is a
very small village near Dawki  (you can see Bangladesh from there). We, the
local Unitarian-Universalist organization of Champaign-Urbana have established
a high school in Nangthalang, and we are in the process of establishing a
beetle nut (taamol) drying/processing facility in that area.

Thanks.
Lalita Kalita

Today, while watching TV, I was pleasantly surprised by Timothy Allen's
'Living Root Bridges'. Here is a great write-up, and Allen's comments.

It seems very few in India, and even in Assam are aware of these bridges.
And now there is a steady flow of Indian and Western tourists to the
Cherrapunji area, where these bridges are located.

All I can say is, tour operators in Assam and Meghalaya, may take note.
