GEOGRAPHY
Abhayapuri is located at 26 degree North and 58 Minutes Latitude & at
90 degree longitude towards the South east of Bongaigaon at a distance
of 21 Kms and at a distance of 07 kms from North Salmara.

AREA
The total area of the town is 475.20 hectare or 2.95 Sq. Km. The town
is bounded by Kakoijana Bamungaon Hills in the North, Borigram Village
in the east, Lungai Hills and Boalimari Village in the South and
Deohati Village in the west.

HISTORY
This beautiful town full of architectural wonders was designed at the
initiative of Rani (Queen) Abhayeswari, one of the most enterprising
rulers of the Bijni Kingdom. The beginning of this place dates back to
the 1897 earthquake, when the then capital of the Bijni Kingdom,
Dumuria was totally destroyed on the 12th of June. Rani Abhayeswari
then restarted the capital building process – initially at Jogighopa
and finally at the dense jungle of Deohati, which then came to be
known as Abhayapuri.

PLACES OF INTEREST

TAAMRONGA BEEL
A picture perfect lake at a distance of 25 kms from Abhayapuri, the
beauty of this lake so enamored the great Saint Mahapurush Srimanta
Sankardev, that he established two Xatras – The Gharaxiya Xatra and
the Bishnupur Xatra in its banks.

An ideal place for Eco Tourism and adventure sports like Para Sailing,
Kayaking, Canoeing, Leisure Boating, Bird Watching and Angling.

The two Xatras are perfectly poised to cater to Cultural Tourism in an
interactive sense coupled with Village Tourism, Tribal Tourism (The
Koch Rajbongshees’, The Bodos’, The Rabhas’, The Garos’, The Santhals’
and the Bhatiya Muslims’ are the major communities here)

KOYA KUJIYA
An unkept marsh till 2006, Koya Kujiya is a glowing example of
people’s participation in Government schemes. 1000 villagers of which
300 were women worked under NREGA to transform this wasteland into a
beautul lake, so much so that it has become one of the most
picturisque destinations in Assam.

The lake is now host to a wide variety of migratory birds.
Encompassing an area of 650 bighas, this water body with many islands
has attracted people from all over with its pristine beauty. People
come in hordes all the year round for leisure boating and bird
watching. An ideal place for Eco Tourism # #
