EMFA condemns attack on photo-journalist

Guwahati: Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has condemned the
unprovoked attack by a section of students of Cotton College on some
journalists on duty today (Monday) in Panbazar locality. The EMFA
urges the authorities (both the Cotton College and Assam Police) to
take legal actions against those guilty students at the earliest.
Mentionable that photo journalist Anupam Nath, who represents
Associated Press, had some arguments with two Cottonians at noon as he
was riding his vehicle in front of RKB Hostel of Cotton College. The
incident turned ugly as the two students started abusing the photo
journalist with slang languages. Later another group of students
(around 25/30) rushed to the spot and physically assaulted Mr Nath.
Mr Nath soon lodged an FIR at Panbazar police station and the police
on duty escorted him to the said hostel asked him to identify the
guilty students. Mr Nath could identify the accused students and then
the situation turned uglier, as more students gathered there and
finally chased both the journalists and the police team.
In this unprovoked assault, many television journalists, who were on
duty, also faced attacks. The Assam Photo Journalists’ Association,
the Journalists’ Forum Assam and the National Federation of Newspaper
Employees have also condemned the incident and demanded appropriate
actions against those guilty students of this prestigious institution.
