Crowds Gather for Maldives Ex-President Nasheed

Crowds surround Mohamed Nasheed, who recently resigned as president of the 
island nation of Maldives, outside a mosque in the country’s capital Male on 
Friday afternoon.
New York Times correspondent Vikas Bajaj is in Male, the capital of the 
Maldives, where president Mohamed Nasheed recently resigned after what appeared 
to be a police mutiny. 
Crowds gathered around Mr. Nasheed outside a mosque after Friday prayers, and 
surrounded his home, clapping, during an press conference, Mr. Bajaj reports. 
Mr. Nasheed said he should have tackled judicial and police reform first after 
being elected, Mr. Bajaj reported on Twitter. “The biggest project should be 
democracy itself,” Mr. Nasheed said. 
Mr. Nasheed also said the police have arrested elected council leaders and the 
mayor of the island of Addu. 
Violent clashes between security forces and supporters of Mr. Nasheed shook the 
capital after his resignation, which he said was at gunpoint
