Here is a letter carried in The Assam Tribune on February, 2012, Thursday
Examplary move
The Assam Tribune Group of newspapers, especially The Assam Tribune never
behaves as a moral cop of the society. Barring one or two, its reports are
never editorialised, whereas editorialised reports are the staple of several
leading dailies and news channels. And they are also self-appointed moral
guardians of the society, they police society’s ethical standards. They preach
what they never practise, but the Assam Tribune Group has practised what others
only preach and pay a lip service to. The Group has become the first in the
country to implement the Majithia Wage Board recommendations.
As a small time journalist with a first-hand knowledge of the plight many of my
colleagues in the profession go through, I would appeal to other newspaper
houses to follow the Assam Tribune Group example. Setting an example of
morality is far better than being a moral cop. Not that I am saying all should
or can implement the latest wage board recommendations. But they can at least
ensure a decent living for the employees who toil for them. Is that asking for
too much? --Yours etc,
RANEN KUMAR GOSWAMI
