A magazine stand on a railway platform in Mumbai.

The magazine landscape in India this week was awash with cover stories
assessing Gujarat and its controversial Chief Minister Narendra Modi to reflect
on the anniversary of the communal riots in the state a decade ago.
Outlook magazine asks an important question – Can it happen again?
“The Gujarat riots of 2002 marked the apogee of communal hatred,” the article’s
authors write.

Ten years after the Sabarmati Express coach was set afire in Godhra on Feb. 27,
and after the bloodbath that followed, we must pause and ask: can it happen
again? Many would argue that it cannot because, in the long term, Narendra Modi
has had to pay a price for presiding over a bloodbath after the advent of
24-hour television. In the immediate aftermath of the riots, however, he gained
enormously.

The news weekly also poses 25 pointed questions to Mr. Modi – a refresher on
what’s gone unanswered.
Frontline magazine takes an unequivocal stand with the headline, “A decade of
shame.” It focuses on the victims still searching for justice. “I will fight
until my dying day to see that Modi and his band of rogues are nailed,” said
Rupa Mody, a resident of Gulberg Society, a colony ravaged by a mob and whose
son has been missing since the riots.

Caravan magazine takes a peek at how a television station “cleans up Hollywood
movies for safe Indian viewing.” TV channels snip parts of movies off
themselves to protect works from the unpredictable feedback of censors. The
writer also manages to get his hands on a list of offensive words banned by the
censor board. (“Prostitute” and “testicles” are included). The TV station’s own
censorship list of words is longer, and arguably, stranger. “Pee”, “porn” and
even the innocuous “panhandle” are on one such list. Indulge in this light read
before you plunge into the magazine’s more heavy-duty offerings – a weighty
tome on Mr. Modi awaits you.
