Dear Friends:

I find three fresh items in India Ink, New York Times, this Sunday (11 03
2012), Actually, these are repeats. This happens because of the
need to separate the world news or for some other editorial adjustments.

1. How India became America (Note: It is such an important topic that i have
emailed it to you separately from yesterday's main issue)
2. India Eyes Muslims Behind Quota System (Note: I might have mentioned it
yesterday)
3. Newswallah:The Bharat Edition (Note: Somehow this item escaped me yesterday.
This contains some startling news; I reproduce it below)

Newswallah: Bharat Edition
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Jammu and Kashmir: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Friday that militancy
in the state during the past two decades has orphaned more than 26,000 children
and widowed more than 8,000 women, Kashmir Live reports. He also said the state
government is considering the idea of creating a Truth and Reconciliation
Commission to inquire into the “alleged cases of forced disappearances” from
the state, but it still needs a “consensus from other stakeholders” including
the central government, the newspaper reports.
Manipur: Irom Sharmila, who has earned the epithet “Iron Lady of Manipur,” will
complete a one-year prison term on Sunday and be freed from the state’s custody
the next day (E-Pao.net). She has been on a fast since November 2000 to get the
central government to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state.
West Bengal: The state government said Wednesday that employees who took part
in the strike in Kolkata sponsored by the Center of Indian Trade Unions on Feb.
28, will lose a day’s salary. This comes as a relief for the government
employees, who had been threatened with the “break-in-service clause,” on the
eve of the strike. If invoked, the clause would have implications on employees’
seniority, promotions and pension calculations, according to a report in The
Telegraph.

Uttar Pradesh: Akhilesh Yadav, the 38-year-old leader of the regional Samajwadi
Party was named chief minister of the state Saturday. While addressing a news
conference on Friday, he said officials from the current administration and
political opponents were trying to defame the political party, which recently
won the state assembly elections routing the Bahujan Samaj Party (Amar Ujala).
Mr. Yadav will be sworn in as the new chief minister on Monday.
Gujarat: The ban on the export of cotton from the central government might be a
positive move for domestic mills, but it is having an adverse effect on the
farmers in the state with small land holdings (Economic Times). Gujarat Chief
Minister Narendra Modi has protested the move in a letter to Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh, alleging that the decision is “anti-farmer” (Hindu Business
Line). The ginning mills in the state are also against this move.
Maharashtra: A resident of Pune has tested positive for Swine Flu, Daily News &
Analysis reports. An isolated case of the infection was detected in a
51-year-old rickshaw puller who is reported to be in a critical condition at
the Bharati Hospital and Medical College. The officials of the Pune Municipal
Corporation (PMC) health department are recommending doctors to watch out for
symptoms in other patients, “while there is no reason to create a scare.”
Kerala: On Thursday a seven-member committee of the Kerala assembly presented a
report indicting former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan for breaking rules in
getting his son, V.A. Arun Kumar, appointments at two-state run institutions
when he was in power. (NDTV)
Tamil Nadu: In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister J.
Jayalalithaa on Friday asked for 1,000 megawatts of power for the statefrom the
central pool, The Economic Times reports. The chief minister termed as
“callous” the central government’s “inaction” to the repeated demands for
additional power, the newspaper reports.
