The Financial Times,UK (May 17, 2012)
Sir James Dyson, British industrial designer and the founder of the
Dyson company has written the following letter to the Financial
Times,UK, today;
Sir, The UK government's cap on immigration is pointless - and
illogical ("Britain's pointless cap on talent", editorial, May 16).
The challenge for a UK government is to harness, not cap, the potential
that our universities offer. And then keep the talent here.
We should be striving to attract and retain the brightest talent. At
Dyson we are searching for
300 new polymaths; people who are ingenious, fearless, thinkers with
the knowledge and desire to develop new technologies. It's how we
remain competitive - it's not brain surgery or
rocket science. The problem is the skills gap. Thirty-seven thousand
engineering vacancies are on offer but to only 22,000 UK engineeing
graduates. The immigration cap is exacerbating the problem
We train our people at our universities, give them the skills they need
to develop their ideas and then send them home - opportunities,
thousands of them, wasted. A cap on immigration is a cap on knowledge
for both universities and business.
