GUWAHATI, May 20: Terming it as a gift to the 47,21,367 students of
the lower and upper primary schools in the State, Chief Minister Tarun
Gogoi on Sunday handed over the appointment letters for the posts of
teachers to 26,110 candidates who passed the Teachers Eligibility Test
(TET), which was conducted by the State Education Department on January
10 last. The recruitment drive was held at the Sarusajai Stadium in
Guwahati.
With this exercise, dubbed as the biggest ever initiative on the part
of the Congress led State Government, 16,764 quality candidates were
appointed on contractual basis under the RTE in the lower primary level,
2,113 candidates in the upper primary level (in Science and
Mathematics), 5,546 candidates in the upper primary level (in Social
Science), 153 candidates in the primary level and 83 candidates in the
upper primary level from the physically challenged category.
Inaugurating the programme, the Chief Minister said that a history
was created in the State. “Today is a golden day for Assam. Earlier, no
such massive recruitment drive was held for any other department of the
State Government. During 2001’s AGP regime, teachers’ recruitment in
small scale was held, but after that the entire process came to halt,”
said Gogoi, adding, “This time, the teachers’ recruitment process was
done on merit basis and the entire process was conducted in a
transparent manner. It will also help revolutionize the education sector
 in the State.”
Congratulating the candidates on the occasion, Gogoi wished them a
bright and prosperous future in their respective teaching fields. He
asked them to work hard with more zeal and dedication to bring laurels
to the State as well as the country. “The appointed teachers, though
brilliant in their studies, should not stop learning while on service.
These new teachers should play a role in the development of education in
the rural areas of the State,” said Gogoi, adding, “If you (the
appointed teachers) don’t work well, you will be removed from your
service. Those who perform better will be sent overseas to get advanced
training.”
The Chief Minister further stated that the performance of the newly
appointed teachers would be graded to keep a tab on the performance of
the latter.
Education and Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present
on the occasion, said that was for the first time the recruitment of
teachers was made without any anomalies like political back-up or other
means. “I am feeling very happy today. You (the appointed teachers)
should put your focus on the students. You must do your duty in a proper
and honest manner. The State has imposed faith on you, that you have to
keep in the days to come,” said Sarma.
He also said that the salaries of the teachers would be released on
the first day of every month. “Government will take care of your salary.
You just work sincerely. Though your appointments are contractual, the
government will also take care of the fact that you could work till your
 retirement,” assured the Education Minister.
It may be mentioned that all the posts of the teachers are meant for the rural
areas.
Sarma said that the remaining TET passed candidates, who missed the
bus this time, had nothing to worry. “Another batch of 29,000 teachers
will be recruited in between September 5 to 15 this year,” he added.
Braving a hot day, candidates from different parts of the State
gathered at the Sarusajai Stadium to get their appointment letters. Many
candidates said that they had faced harassment as all the appointment
letters were not distributed at the main programme venue. Many
candidates also fell ill. “The appointment letters could have been
distributed district wise. We have undertaken lots of trouble to reach
Guwahati to collect the appointment letters,” said one of the candidates
 on the condition of anonymity.
Besides the Chief Minister, Education Minister and Parliamentary
Secretary, LS Changsan, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of
Education; Gautam Bora, former education minister and present MLA, and
other officials of the education department and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan
(SSA) were present in the programme.
