PHAGWARA: An NRI has been arrested for allegedly poisoning his wife for
"insurance money" two months back in Kapurthala district.
Vijay Swan (41) was today produced before Judicial Magistrate, who
remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.
Sita got married to Vijay in 2001 and the couple were settled in the
US.
The couple came from the US to Khalyan village in Phagwara on March 18.
After dinner, Sita felt uneasiness and started vomiting, SHO Shiv Kamal
Singh, adding, she died before reaching the hospital.
Sita's mother Chanan Kaur alleged that Vijay had poisoned her daughter
to claim insurance money of about Rs 14 crore as he was the nominee in
her insurance policy, he said.
On her complaint, the viscera report was sent to Forensic Science
Laboratory in Kharar, he added.
On Thursday, the report confirmed poisoning as the cause of death.
Following which a case of murder was registered against Vijay and he
was arrested, Singh said.
