To, The Chairman, Assam Human Rights Commission, STATFED HO Building, Bhangagarh, Guwahati- 781 005 Assam Dated: September 6, 2012 Subject: Complaint against the police/administration of Assam Dear Sir, Namaskar. With due respect, we on behalf of media fraternity of Assam, would like to draw your attention towards some of our grievances. It is observed that some anti-social elements have come up with an evil design to spread terror amongst the peace-loving people of Assam and they have strategically started attacking the media persons in various occasions and more shockingly in front of the police and the local administration. The last dawn-to-dusk Assam Bandh (on August 28), called by All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) along with the participation of 31 other organizations witnessed large scale violence in several parts of the State and the media persons were also attacked by the supporters of the Bandh. We have reports that at least twelve working journalists were targeted by the unruly Bandh supporters in Goalpara, Barpeta, Chamaguri and Tezpur. Some of the journalists including Raju Sahu, Amulya Nath and Jayanta Das had received severe injuries and are still undergoing treatment in the hospitals. We feel annoyed that the local administration, police and paramilitary personnel on duty also turned onlookers in many places when the media persons were attacked by the goons with stick and sharp weapons in their full views. The victim journalists have already filed FIR in local police stations and may we request you to kindly treat this as an official compliant from our end.
