Writer translates nearly 300 stories into Bengali

GUWAHATI, Nov 15 – Many of the stories penned by some of the most prominent
names in Assamese literature like Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Homen Borgohain,
Nirupama Borgohain, Sourav Kumar Chaliha and many others are being read by
Bengali readers spread across Kolkata, Patna, Bangladesh, Jharkhand etc because
of one man.Basudev Das has translated nearly 300 Assamese short stories into
Bengali till now which have been published in prominent magazines. Das born in
Assam is now based in
Kolkata and he retired from job to devote more time to his translation works.
He feels this is the only way to show his love and respect for Assam.Das, who
is going to attend a seminar at Gauhati University on November 17 and 18, said
that Assamese literature is so rich in thematic variation and technique that it
needs to be translated into as many languages as possible.“Assamese culture and
literature must be promoted and I feel very happy that I have chosen this
mission to translate Assamese short stories into Bengali,” said Das adding that
the articles of Homen Borgohain which he has translated into Bengali have been
well accepted by the readers of Kolkata.It needs to be mentioned here that
another collection of Das is going to hit the stands in December. This
collection of 40 Assamese short stories translated into Bengali will introduce
the Bengali readers to the political transitions of Assam.“All the stories in
this collection reflect the political turmoil in the State in a very poignant
manner. A lot of changes have come over in Assam in the last few decades and
literature has very wonderfully captured the aspirations and pangs of shattered
dreams,” said Das. Stories by Harekrishna Deka, Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Arupa
Patangia Kalita and others are included in this collection.Das has also taken
up Homen Borgohain’s Atmanusandhan for translation.“I have also decided to
translate Assamese literature into Oriya language as well and for this I am
learning Oriya now,” he said.
