Call for nominations for Green Assam Award
Correspondent
JAGIROAD, Feb 5 – Global warming refers to an average increase in the earth’s
temperature which in turn causes climate change. The gradual increase of carbon
dioxide (CO2) and some other green house gases are the main factor to make the
earth
warmer. Average global temperature has increased by almost 10F in the
past century. Scientists are of the view that the average global
temperature will increase 20F to 60F over the next
one hundred year. It can change the earth’s surface as never before. A
warmer earth may lead to changes in rainfall, rise in sea level, and a
wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife and human beings.Human influences are
largely responsible for global warming. Although global warming is a big
problem, we can do something to reduce the amount of green – house gases in the
atmosphere. With this view, the Anti-Global Warming Society, an NGO, was formed
in 2004 at Morigaon with Upen Chandra Goswami and Dr Leela Kanta Borthakur as
president and secretary respectively.Since its inception, the Anti-Global
Warming
Society is taking different steps for mitigating the different
environment related hazards arising due to climate change. Over the last
few years the society planted more than 15,000 saplings, distributed
more than 1 lakh saplings among school and college students, set up a
pottery industry to produce eco-friendly items such as earthen glasses,
bowls etc., to encourage people to use them instead of disposable
plastic items, set up botanical gardens and one green- house in Morigaon
College premises for the preservation of endangered species and orchids. For
proper sensitisation of people on the environmental issues the
society, on regular basis, arranges seminars, awareness programmes,
debates, essay competitions and poster competitions on issues like
population explosion, conservation of bio-diversity etc.In
addition to these, the society, for the first time in 2011, decided to
initiate an environment related award, the ‘Green Assam Award’, and in
that year eminent environmentalist Dr Dulal Chandra Goswami was honoured
with this award in a solemn function graced by Governor JB Patnaik. As
different individuals/ organisations are devoting themselves in carrying out
studies
on environmental issues and for the conservation of environment, the
society feels that their contribution should be properly recognised.
Therefore for the ‘Green Assam Award’ to be given in June, 2013,
nominations are invited from individuals/ organisations to reach Dr Lila Kanta
Barthakur, Secretary, Anti-Global Warming
Society on or before March 31, 2013. Details of nomination procedure,
eligibility and other conditions can be obtained from the website of the
society www.antiglobalwarming. org or directly contact to the
principal, Moirabari College Morigaon, Assam.
