English version of Gunamala released Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, April 13 – The Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva has brought out English translation of Srimanta Sankaradeva’s holy book Gunamala. This is the second book published by the Society. The English version of the Bargeets, composed by the great saint Mahapurush Sankaradeva, was the first book published by the society under the title Great Songs. It was published last year. Dr Sanjib Kumar Barkakoti has translated both the books. In the English version of the Gunamala, transliteration of the original verse with diacritical marks has been done by Jadav Chandra Mahanta of Titabor. Bhoirob Mahanta of the Golaghat Thukubil Sattra has sponsored the Gunamala publication. The book is distributed by Bani Mandir, Hedayetpur, Guwahati, said Dr Barkakoti.In presenting the English version of the Gunamala, Barkakoti said, the global readers are kept in view, especially the young generation. So the rendering has been done in simple prose. The translation is literal. Care has been taken to present the writings of Srimanta Sankaradeva as it is, without editing, abridging or expanding.Gunamala being the object of veneration of all followers of Srimanta Sankaradeva, this book occupies a special place in the order founded by the great saint. It is kept on the altar. Every one is eager to know the contents of the book.Moreover, as the members of the young generation are more comfortable in English, the contents of this great book can be made accessible to them through English. So the translation is targeted at Assamese lads, too, Dr Barkakoti said.Another significance of Gunamala is that it represents the entire Hindu society as it depicts the life of Krishna, the role model of the Indians. Srimanta Sankaradeva authored it in the style of a compact biography of that epic character. So Gunamala is very significant from that perspective too, he said.Dr Barkakoti has already translated the Namghosha, another major literary work of the neo-Vaishnavite movement of the State (The Assam Tribune,14.04.2013)
