Holistic management of watersheds stressed
STAFF Reporter
 GUWAHATI,
Sept 1 – Denudation of the city hills have led to the increase in the
total run-off volume, as high as 54 times in the events of
high-intensity and short-duration rains, while it may lead to a 21- times
increase in the total sediment yield under a similar situation. This was found
while undertaking a study for a pilot project titled ‘Managing the hilly
watersheds through
ecological management practices’, in an experimental watershed area of
IIT Guwahati.
With these outcomes of the study in hand, a pilot
project is sought to be implemented in an 18.5-hectare watershed area of the
city’s Garbhanga Hills, behind the Sarusajai National Games
Village. The city has 105 watersheds.
The above disclosures, which have significant importance for tackling the
flashflood problem of the
city, were made by Prof A K Sarma, who is also the Head of the Civil
Engineering Department of the IIT Guwahati, at a workshop here yesterday. Prof
Sarma is the principal investigator of the above pilot project.
He laid stress on holistic management of the city watersheds with
ecological management practices, to save the city from the menacing
flashflood problem. He asserted that the topography of Guwahati does not permit
safe release of excessive water by gravity flow.
Moreover, while tackling flashfloods, the pumping system would require high
energy and, therefore, not suitable from the climate change point of view.
Again, reliability of power supply is
questionable, as, failure may lead to serious crisis, he said. The above study
was undertaken to tackle the city’s flashflood problem and the
water-related hazards in hilly areas with a socio-economic and
ecologically sustainable approach by the Civil Engineering Department of IIT,
Guwahati.
The Union Urban Development Ministry has extended support to the study. At the
workshop, a lively interaction took place with the participation of several
scientists engaged in the field and leading social activists. Additional Chief
Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, Subhash Chandra Das and leading
popular science movement activist Prof Anil Kumar Goswami, who is also a former
principal of the
centurion Cotton College, also addressed the function, among others.
