Public representatives appeal hawkers to suspend agitation The representatives from Assam Senior Citizens’ Association Guwahati, Journalists’ Forum, Assam(JFA) and conscious citizens of Guwahati held a discussion with the representatives of All Guwahati Hawkers’ Association today (Saturday) at Guwahati Press Club and discussed about the 5 point demand charter of the hawkers’ association. Mr Dilip Barman, president and Mr Kamaluddin Ahmed, general secretary of All Guwahati Hawkers’ Association expressed full confidence on the public representatives and agreed to abide by any decision mutually agreed by the public representatives with the All Guwahati Newspaper Agents’ Association and the newspaper house owners. While expressing happiness at the co-operative attitude of the hawkers’ association, the public representatives recorded their strong resentment at the uncooperative attitude of the newspaper agents who refused to come to the negotiation table and afterwards even switched off the mobile connection on the plea of the matter being taken up by the Labour Tribunal which has reportedly declared the agitation (of hawkers) illegal. The newspaper owners’ representatives were ready to join the talks, though it did not materialize due to the newspaper agents’ refusal to cooperate. Finally the public representatives appealed to the hawkers’ association to temporarily withdraw their agitation and allow the public representatives to hold further discussions with the newspaper agents and newspaper owners to bring an amicable solution to the matter at the earliest.
