Dear Sanjoy, Thanks for your mail. After going through your mail I thought the Delhi is really waking up and going to implement the suggestions made by the Bezbaruah Committee. But todays news item “Too little, too late… by SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY actually paints a bleak picture. It seems many of the suggestions made by the committee are not going to be implemented or put on hold for future consideration.

Once enacted, the police can take tough action upon complaints. Nowadays, as our survey thru the NE Centre at Jamia found out, most people don't want to approach the police to register a complaint because they feel they'd be stressed out again or because they did not know the law or what provisions they should access. once the law is thru Parliament, then the focus should be on the law breaker and law protector! and all of us to push, highlight and ensure these work. A group of us (including historians and other scholars from and on the NE) are working on developing a NE history paper for Universities. It should be ready by March or so.
