Congratulation to the new AASU executive; the body is taking charge at a crucial time with many threats to Assam and Assamese identity. At this juncture, we need bold young men who can overcome and move past it, visionaries who can transform the obstacles into opportunities and pragmatic leaders who can set a goal and executes toward that diligently. We feel that Assam, despite its vast resources , continued to lag behind mainly because of the absence of proper planning and execution. Assam’s human Resource is the most valuable asset. The region has no dearth of worthy sons and daughters who have made it big in nations across the globe. Many of these non-residents would like to contribute to their motherland sharing their expertise, knowledge and experience; AASU can tap into the enormous resources and work together towards a common goal.I have been living in the United States for the last 16 years and have been involved with a number of organizations working for the welfare of Assam especially in the education sector. In the month of January 2008 , there was a MOU signed between AASU and Friends of Assam and seven sisters ( FASS). The MOU was a broad agreement on several areas where we can help each other. Some of my ideas were incorporated in the MOU one of which was adopting a school – AASU would identify one and we, in turn , would promote the students through mentoring or by financial support. It was a pioneering effort at that time. However, it has never been implemented. The primary reason was the lack of communication channel, we couldn’t and even today yet to find any public communication media or email to contact AASU executive. In the Year 2012, AASU formed an education cell and provided scholarship to a number of economically disadvantaged students. It was a noble initiative. Unfortunately, it seems it was one time only since there was no further word on this effort. The world is becoming a global village , people are now broadly connected by easy travel, mass media and electronic communications, and today we are in a position to work together as a global “oxomiya” community. Technologies with the capacity to provide access to information, learning and decision making are opening new paths to education, employment and economic growth. There is great space for collaboration and we are immensely pleased to know that the global mentoring group ‘Xomidhan’ was invited to present career counselling sessions at the at the recent 16th Annual Conference in Dudhnoi. Xomidhan is a group of young , energetic, promising Assamese professionals with a strong desire and longing for giving back to their state. AASU can further cement the partnership with Xomidhan by organizing such sessions at regular intervals - this will go a long way towards grooming and building the future generation. AASU can also collaborate with AKADAMICS – Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) sponsored Kaushik Das Memorial College Scholarship. They can organize workshop to encourage Assamese students to participate in competitions like Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.We extol the newly formed AASU executive to take charge , be the instrument of change and make things happen. Let’s ask not what the nation can do for us , let’s ask what AASU can do for our nation. We the non-residents would like to partner and join hands with the new leadership. We hope to reach the newly elected President Dipanka Kumar Nath through this open letter. Let’s hope for exciting and diverse opportunities that shall spark new partnerships and a brighter future for the new generation.Ankur Bora, [email protected] , Texas , United States. _______________________________________________ assam mailing list [email protected] http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org
