We are glad to inform thatthe ‘Majuli Friendship Day ‘ to honor Jadav Payeng 
and raise awareness ontree plantation and ecology in Majuli , will be observed 
in the town of Nagaonon 3rd January 2016.  It isthe 5th edition of Friendship 
day which has been observed since 2010on the first Sunday of New Year. This 
year the event is inspired by the celebrationof “Jadav Payeng Tree Planting 
Ceremony” at the township of Bridgewater beingorganized by Assam Foundation of 
North America. We also had very usefuldiscussion through the 
‘Support-a-child-Assam Yahoo group’ under the initiativeof Wahid Saleh. We are 
glad that Prof Prashanta Kr Bordoloi, Director ofKaziranga University and 
Shantanoo Bhattacharyya, Engineer and erosionspecialist , among others will 
take part in the event.

Lastly we are grateful to DrSanjib Kumar Borkakoti President, Society for 
Srimanta Sankaradeva for arrangingthe event.

Dear All,

Societyfor Srimanta Sankaradeva, a global organisation engaged in
promotingthe legacy of Srimanta Sankaradeva is organising an event on
January3, 2016 at Nagaon to create awareness about the river island
Majuli,which is a hub of Sankari culture in all its hues. The event
has beennamed as 'Majuli Friendship Day'. It will highlight the rich
heritageof the river island and draw attention to the peril of
erosionthe island is facing. Earlier the Society celebrated ‘Nagaon
FriendshipDay’ in 2014. That event honored a few individuals
contributingto Sankari culture.

TheSociety will felicitate environmentalist Jadav Payeng in this
MajuliFriendship Day as he has contributed a lot to the preservation
of ecologyin Majuli. He will lead a plantation drive alongwith the
event.The participants of the event will also take a pledge. The
pledge is: “I take a vow to do my best to preserve the ecology. I
willplant at least one sapling every year in my premises.”

Therewill be display of different facets of Sankari culture including
Gayan-Bayanin the event. There will be Sattriya Nritya recital by
nationalaward winning artist Meenakshi Medhi in the function. Ranjan
Bezbaruaand Madhab Krishna Das will perform Bargeet. Artists of
SrimantaSankaradeva Sangha will perform Diha-Naam and Thiya-naam.
Artistsfrom Rangalaya, Puranigudam will perform Gayan-Bayan

Anexhibition of Aharya used in Bhaona will be held during the Majuli
FriendshipDay. These will include Mask, Costume, Headgear, Ornaments
anddifferent accessories used in Bhaona. It may be noted that all
theseproducts were prepared by the members of Society for Srimanta
Sankaradevain a workshop conducted by it in 2014 under the
sponsorshipof Sangeet
NatakAkademi. A Photo Exhibition also will be held where different
facets ofMajuli will be displayed through photographs. Simultaneously
an Artcompetition will be organised for students on the theme of
‘Majuli’.

Severalexperts from different discipline will address the event. Dr
AnupamSarma of World Wildlife Fund, Rituraj Phukan, a climate expert
and DrArun Sarma, President of Majuli Island Protection and
DevelopmentCouncil will give presentations. Bhadrakrishna Goswami,
formerPresident of Asom Sattra Mahasabha will inaugurate the event.
Dr BinoyBordoloi of Bordoloi Bio-tech, USA, Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka,
VC ofMahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Prof Prashanta
KrBordoloi, Director of Kaziranga University, Shantanoo
Bhattacharyya,Engineer and erosion specialist and Janardan Goswami,
Sattradhikarof Uttar Kamalabari Sattra will also attend the event.

TheSociety wants the dealers of ethnic cloth and ethnic food of
Majuli toexhibit and sell their products in the event. We have
announcedthat any one interested in giving stalls of food or cloth is

Mandir,Amolapatty, Nagaon. The
plantationwill be carried out in the morning at 8.30 am in the
premisesof ADP College in co-operation with ADP College Teachers
Council.The main event will start at 9.30 am at Nagaon Natya Mandir.
The artcompetition will start at 9.00 am at the same venue.

TheMajuli Friendship Day is sponsored by the Assamese diaspora in
UnitedStates and Netherlands. Ankur Bora living in Dallas, USA has
co-ordinatedthem. It may be mentioned that Society for Srimanta
Sankaradevaorganised an international conference on Majuli in 2012.
It gaverelief to flood victims of Majuli and also gave financial
assistanceto several artisans in Majuli. The Society is associated
with theeffort to get World Heritage Site status for Majuli.
