ZerOrigIndia Foundation, which restricts its scope to India, has set itself the
task of having a properly staffed and fundedmultidisciplinary research team of
experts take up the challenge of answeringthe question as to when and where the
zero digit first appeared, and ifpossible to pinpoint the prevailing cultural
conditions under which theindividual thrived, who made this astounding
contribution to progress.

Members of this initiative , including our esteemed WahidSaleh ,  recently came
across thediscovery of   a stone slab with epigraphicalinscriptions .   The
broken, roundedstone (15x9x6 cm) inscribed with numerical figures may possibly
be the earliestexamples of a ZERO inscription in the world. Prof. H.N Dutta
former Head of theDirectorate of Archaeology Assam under Cultural Affairs
Department and presentlyVice-chancellor of Nagaland Open University, confirmed
the date of the stoneinscription of ZERO, discovered by a local school teacher
in the district  of Golaghat, to be from the 3rd century CE. TheAssam ZERO, if
reconfirmed by independent sources, would be one of the mostimportant
historical discoveries of the world.
