12 PEOPLE KILLED IN MILITANT ATTACK By our staff reporter, assamlive.com Guwahati, August 13: At least twelve people were gunned down and four seriously injured by suspected NDFB militants near Raksamgiri bordering Assam in Meghalaya's West Garo Hill district early today.
Meghalaya Director General of Police told media persons that the incident occurred around 0745 hrs. The identity of the group behind the massacre was yet to be confirmed. He, however, hinted that it might be the handiwork of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), a militant group belonging to Assam. However, unofficial sources from Tura, headquarters of West Garo Hill district, put the toll at nearly 25. Describing the incident, the DG said a truck carrying people was coming from Tikrikilla, about 120 km from Tura to a local bazar in Raksamgiri. Some armed militants hiding nearby stopped the truck just before reaching the bazar and sprayed bullets on the passengers. The people, panic stricken, jumped down the truck and ran shelter for safety. The armed militants then chased them and opened fire indiscriminately killing twelve of them on the spot, the DG said. However, the sources from Tikrikilla apprehended that the toll might rise for many of the truck passengers were still missing and the number of injured was more for some of them were admitted to different hospitals in nearby places. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and a massive manhunt was on to nab the culprits.
