Guwahati, August 13: At least twelve people were gunned down and
four seriously injured by suspected NDFB militants near Raksamgiri
bordering Assam in Meghalaya's West Garo Hill district early
today.

Meghalaya Director General of Police told media persons that the
incident occurred around 0745 hrs. The identity of the group
behind the massacre was yet to be confirmed. He, however, hinted
that it might be the handiwork of the National Democratic Front of
Bodoland (NDFB), a militant group belonging to Assam. However,
unofficial sources from Tura, headquarters of West Garo Hill
district, put the toll at nearly 25. Describing the incident, the
DG said a truck carrying people was coming from Tikrikilla, about
120 km from Tura to a local bazar in Raksamgiri. Some armed
militants hiding nearby stopped the truck just before reaching the
bazar and sprayed bullets on the passengers. The people, panic
stricken, jumped down the truck and ran shelter for safety.

The armed militants then chased them and opened fire
indiscriminately killing twelve of them on the spot, the DG said.
However, the sources from Tikrikilla apprehended that the toll
might rise for many of the truck passengers were still missing and
the number of injured was more for some of them were admitted to
different hospitals in nearby places. Senior police officials
rushed to the spot and a massive manhunt was on to nab the
culprits. The DG admitted that there was no previous intelligence
report and claimed that security would be further tightened to
thwart any more incidents on or before the Independence Day
celebrations.
