The explanation of the name Digboi you  have suggested  is the most popular  and most prevalent. But I can't get any written or any other form of authentic proof  for this.

The etymology I believe was spread solely through word of mouth from generations. The etymological explanation nevertheless has a charm of its own, so why not accept it.

Never thought of the origion or the etymology of this name. How did Digboi get it's name? Is it by the term that the 'sahab's used when they saw oil, like saying 'dig boy, dig'? A non-Assamese friend told me about it. so was wondering if it is true!
