Hi Rabin: thanks for explaining the meaning of 'Sarthebari'. I couldn't have done it myself in this life time or next. But the name does not have anything to do with the Sarthebari having the big business of Assamese silk material, does it?

The Kamrupiya 'the-r' (I don't have the Assamese font loaded in this computer, sorry) is like 'hot-or' in upper Assam, I know now. Like 'mama-the-r ghorot jaam', will be like 'mama-hotor ghoroloi jaam' in there.

To answer your questions I would say: if the person taking the name, writes like that, then others should write too. In proper noun, I don't think a person needs to (necessarily) follow any scholastic rules - it will be easier for others to pronounce it correctly, but s/he need not follow it. And to a non-speaker of the language (other than English etc.), you have to explain it anyway.

So I would write as the person writes his "own" name - neither is right or wrong, in my mind.

Are you taking any other big project like the Assamese fonts that you created a few years ago? Keep up the good work and keep us informed.

take care.

BDew,
Here are few other questions!

Chandra Kanta Bharali is a name, found in some English publications as well, but he is no more. Will you write his name as Sondro Kanto Bhorali? If not why not?
"Raxi" is Rajen Barua defined in this survey; "Raaxi" by Chandan Mahanta for the same. Which one will you accept valid and why?
Thanks for the answer to previous inquiry!
Rabin
ps:
sr + eT = sreT ba seT^; br + eT = breT ba beT^; kaka + eT = kakaeT; Aaf + eT = AafeT; baf + eT = bafeT; dada + eT = dadaeT

sr + eT + r + barI ... sreTrbair ... seT^rbarI ... seT^barI

As i wrote, todays spoken "the" is heavily used in yester written kamrupi including hema saraswati, madhava kandali, rudra kandali, rama saraswati - not to mention Vaishnava age. Omitting "the" from Assamese is a mutilation, hard for Assamese speakers to understand lot.
Here is a audion link from a Kamrupi loka geet uses "the" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ratne/files/audio/theuse.mp3
