The real issue is : "ego trips, power trips" which is messing up the whole community.
"There are some good leaders - but some of the problems lie with the fact that some of the core members (leadership) of these organizations do not see eye to eye with others" - Ram
That is OK - lets identify those few leaders/members/individuals. Lets talk with them. Lets try to forget the past. I am sure - in this category - we will have only 10-15 people. May be 20-30. I hope all of you are agree on that and lets talk with them-resolve the issues. There are no issues which cann't be resolved. On top of that- please keep in mind that we have only less than 2000 head count. You are not representing the 1 million people from Tamil Nadu or from Andra Pradesh. Also if you can't do some plus and minus for good future or for the future generation - you are not a good leader/member/individual even you are founder of this organization. I strongly believe that everybody's MISSION or IDEOLGY are more or less same. Need not to explain.
"Local orgs. groups can be far more effective to serve the needs of those communities " -C-da
Agree. Local groups are fine like Jonaki in California, DC group in DC , Minneapolis group so and so forth. These are local units/orgs. But when come to Assam Convention, we are trying to re-present much bigger way, so let make ONE platform for greater interest of everybody. Lets help everybody to forget the past.
"We run into problems when we use the name of an org. as a proxy for our clannish cliquish outlooks and behaviors" -C
Name is not a serious issue. Here is US even companies are change their name depending upon business need. It can be work out.
Lets forget the past. President/Secretary of AANA/ASA/UAONA/ .....Please please please come forward join hands and lets do something much better than this exisiting foundation. I have a direct question for you - Are really interested to become this type of President/Secretary for 1 year without doing anything?
We are sure, you have much more capability and will and sure, we will able to do more good thing than even. Lets start a new era. It is not impossible. You can do it.
My earlier suggestion "it will be OK to keep 3 president, secretary and 30, 40 50 executive member for that propose of unification if necessary". just to avoid the "power trips" if any.
I have also the same doubts like Ram Sarangapani. But it will help us to make it ONE initially.

PS. Can any body pass me the list of current President/Secretary and executive member of all these groups AANA/ASA/UAONA/ ..... etc or smaller units if any with Name and email/Phone.

Some valid thoughts, but few Assamese see any real cohesion forming tomorrow with the organizations.
There are some good leaders - but some of the problems lie with the fact that some of the core members (leadership) of these organizations do not see eye to eye with others.
There are too many things at stake here: ego trips, power trips, 'we founded this', 'they broke away from us', 'we broke away from them', 'they are not our members', ' we are the only (and first) Assamese org', ' we have more members' etc. While a lot of this may be just plain human frailty, they do seem to tell us that we do not have the capacity to unite for any cause. Other than these things in the way - there doesn't seem to be much to hold us back from unifying.
Over the last couple of years, there seems to be some effort to come together under one umbrella like the conventions (Conferences). At least that is a step - but the leaders of these Organizations do need to move forward beyond this point and aim for only one organization. That I presume would cater to the wider audience.
I do not think it is necessary for one to join one organization or another so that a change can be affected in policy. In fact, I do know of people joining one such organization, thinking that they may be able to influence some decisions. No such thing happens in reality though. Now these same people have gotten so fed-up, that they have turned in their badges.
My question---Do you really happy to see all these small small difference between and among these small number of people? I know-the answer is "NO". I feel, it will be OK to keep 3 president, 3 secretary and 30, 40 50 executive member for that propose unification if necessary.
This sounds like the Iraqi Governing Body. In fact this may actually work in Iraq - but I seriously doubt if it will work for us. :)
