Chairmen to 19 State PSUs appointed >From Our Staff Correspondent NEW DELHI, Sept 28 Bowing to the pressure from the party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has finally cleared appointments of chairmen to 19 State Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) majority of which are sick. Those appointed included 15 MLAs and four senior partymen.
The appointments, interestingly, were announced hours after Chief Minister left the shores of the country on his way to the United States. The appointments supposedly were cleared by Sri Gogoi last evening following a lengthy discussion with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Paban Singh Ghatowar. State Government officials later released the list of appointments to the media this afternoon. The Chief Minister accompanied by his wife Dolly Gogoi and a personal assistant left New Delhi for New York this morning at around 6.15. State Rural Development Minister Ripun Bora and Anil Rezza, besides senior State Government officials among others, were at the IGI Airport to see off Sri Gogoi. Meanwhile, Sri Gogoi has tried to do a fine balancing act by seeking to keep happy the belligerent MLAs as well as a few potential troublemaker in the party. Those appointed include the likes of Chandan Sarkar, MLA and Kirip Chaliha, who have been made the chairman of Assam State Development Corporation for Scheduled Castes and Jyoti-Chitraban, respectively. The MLAs who were appointed include Dildar Rezza (Assam Minority Development and Finance Corporation), Bhimananda Tanti (Assam State Transport Corporation ASTC), Dr Kalyan Gogoi (Assam State Housing Board), Ajit Singh (Assam Tourism Development Corporation), Sarbananda Choudhury (ARTFED), Uttara Kalita (Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Limited). The Assam Fisheries Development Corporation will have a new chairman in Basanta Das, as will AMTRON, whose new chairman is Md. Idris Ali. Congress MLA Pani Ram Rabha will head Assam Government Marketing Corporation, Praneswar Basumatary (Assam Small Industries Development Corporation), Md. Aftabuddin Moolah (Assam Seed Corporation), Smt. Hoosenara Islam (Assam Minority Development Board), Rajeev Lochan Pegu (Assam Cooperative Jute Mill) and Monilal Goala (FISHFED). A few party favourites whose names were cleared for appointments include Joy Kumar Jain (Assam Khadi and Village Industries), Sailen Bora (ASCARD Bank) and Akon Bora (STATEFED). The Chief Minister had told this Correspondent that the criteria being used for selecting the State PSUs for new appointments were that majority of them were on either on road to revival or at least had the prospect of being revived if managed properly. A lot of effort had gone into identifying the PSUs and those, which had no hope of revival, have been left out, he said. ___________________________________________________ Art meets Anesthesia; Shefali Weds Dr. Raman.
