Involving NRAs in development
Sir, A new initiative in Assam has come to our notice of late, concerning the exploration of the scope for non-resident Assamese (NRA) peoples involvement in economic activities in Assam.

It is indeed praiseworthy that encouraged by the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which was organised in New Delhi on January 9 this year, some of our people in Assam have taken the initiative to mobilise the support of the NRAs for the economic uplift of our native land.

Some of our NRI friends were lucky enough to take part in the January 9 convention. The venture was a laudable one. Going by the experience of that convention, we can assume that the effort at mobilising the support of the NRAs cannot but be a good one.

During my holidays in Assam this time, I had the chance to meet some of the organisers of the Prabasi Asamiya Sanmilan in Guwahati. In a formal meeting with them, I found most of those present were agreeable to the suggestion that the organisers should try to contact all those successful NRAs living in other parts of India too, besides contacting the ones living in other parts of the world itself. No doubt, the organisers will have to mobilise the NRAs living in other parts of the globe to make their venture successful.

A few days back,  the NRAs living in the UK and the USA exchanged  views on the issue and had identified the thrust areas for Assams economic development to be as tourism, tea sector, computer industry, medical facilities like hospitals,  schools and colleges, social services e.g., working with women and the disabled persons, power sector, roads, infrastructure etc.

The experiences of the successful Assamese entrepreneurs in each of these fields needed to be known  so as to enable ourselves to know the correct picture prevailing in Assam.  Such individuals should be involved in the Sanmilan as panelists. Their inclusion in such a manner will immensely help the NRAs and the organisers in arriving at the right conclusions.

There should also be attempts on the part of the organisers, to identify the thrust areas much ahead of the Sanmilan and these should be published through  Internet. These steps will serve the cause in an astounding manner. Yours etc., RINI KAKATI, London.
