Aussie-NZ ODI in city today
By Our Sports Reporter
GUWAHATI, Nov 8 World champion Australian team was accorded a warm reception in the
city today after their arrival for the TVS Cup triangular series match against New
Zealand tomorrow. It is the third visit of official Australian cricket team to the
city. Bill Lawrie led the first Australian team to Guwahati in 1969 to play a
three-day match against East Zone team and after that in 1996 second official
Australian team under the leadership of Mark Taylor visited the city to play a One-day
international match against Hanse Cronjis South African team in the Wills Triangular
series match at the Nehru Stadium here.

The Nehru Stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex is all set to host tomorrows
match. The entire complex was given a bridal look for the One-day international which
will be the eleventh match in this stadium. When Australia already entered the final
of the triangular series New Zealand are still struggling for a berth in the title
clash. Tomorrows match for the Black Caps is counted to be most vital one as they are
in a must win situation. The Kangaroos have lost their only ODI played here earlier
while the Kiwis had lost one against one win in previous two outings.

The Nehru Stadium pitch is likely to favour the medium pacers in the morning session
but the medium pacers and spinners might get favour in the later part of the match.
According to curator Dr Sunil Baruah they are trying to lay a rock solid track and he
hoped that the bowlers will get sufficient bounce off the pitch. But everything will
depend on tomorrows climate as cloudy sky may delay start and dampen the wicket. Both
the skippers Ricky Ponting of Australia and Stephen Flemming of New Zealand
expressed their satisfaction over the conditions of wicket and outfield and if
everything goes all right Guwahatians may expect an entertaining match tomorrow.

Meanwhile, immediately after their arrival at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi Airport
from Delhi, the team was whisked away to the Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok depriving all the
cricketing fans from having a glimpse of their favourite players. Immediately after
their arrival at the hotel, captain Ricky Ponting and coach John Buchanan went to
Nehru Stadium and had a look at the pitch and outfield. The team did not go out for
work out and preferred to stay at their hotel rooms.

Later addressing a press conference at their hotel lounge this evening the Australian
captain expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements here for the match. Asked why
they skipped the practice session this afternoon, the stocky Australian leader said
that skipping practice did not mean that they we taking the match lightly, but they
consider every game as good practice sessions and moreover, they had some useful
workout sessions during their stay in Delhi after the Pune match.

Ponting believes that New Zealand is a tough opponent and with some initial hiccups
in the series the Black Caps are making remarkable improvement. On the final line-up
of his team tomorrow Ponting said that Jimmy Maher and Michael Kasparowicz are almost
sure to make into the final eleven. He also hinted that Ian Harvey and Andrew Symonds
are fully fit. Ponting, however, refused to name the playing to squad for tomorrows
match.

The shrewd Australian One-day match captain believes that in the morning session all
the pace bowlers will get tremendous favour on the track as moistures on the pitch
will help them in getting movement. On his teams batting strategy, Ponting said that
if in first 10 overs they lose a couple of wickets they will concentrate on shining
off the ball and then will go on an attack.

Describing his own and Mathew Haydens form, Ponting said that there should not be
any problem in their batting form in the series as they are confident enough to tackle
any kind of bowlers. When asked about replacement of great pace bowler Glenn McGrath,
the captain opined that Nathan Bracken is coming up in a big way and in near future he
will be a dreaded pace bowler. Hailing Saurav Ganguly for his superb leadership
quality, Ponting said that under Sauravs captaincy India can do well in the remaining
part of the series.
