The North East Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised a two day seminar on Agri Business on 13th & 14th at Hotel Ashoka Brahmaputra. NECCI always take a leading role to organise such a seminar which is praisworthy.

In the North-East agriculture continues to be oriented towards livelihood. An agricultural model suitable for the need of the North-east must be developed immediately and the commercial aspect of agriculture, rather than subsistence farming must be given full attention.

The Governor of Mizoram, Mr.A.Kholi was the chief guest. He exhorted the businessmen to interact with farmer and evolve an independence mechanism, when crops will be produced by the farmers as per industrial requriments, the only thing required will be marketing link ups. "The per capital investment in the North-East is 10 times more than in the rest of the country" he added.

The Hon'ble Secretary of North-Eastern Council (NEC) Mr.P.L.Thanga IAS was the guest of honour says -- The commercial aspect of cultivation including the new trends in agri business such as packaging and processing are not given due importance, despite the tremendous potential of the region.

It was not sufficient to introduce new methods of agriculture to the common people. There is a need for developing an agricultural growth model tailor made for the region. Mr.P.L.Thanga also stressed for developing an adequate land holding system, and to spread awareness among the farmers about contract farming. "If the farmers start producing on demand, there will be no dearthof revenue. They can provide raw materials to the local industrial units. So agriculture and agri-based industry can both prosper together".

If these change were not put in place, the region might miss the current era of prosperity sweeping the rest of the country.

We hope to join in further discussion on this topic at the seminar of the second Prabasi Asomiya Sanmilan which will be held in Guwahati on 7th & 8th January 2005 for two days.
