Hi,
Just came after invigilating a school exam -- through spy - network and cameras.
It is more thrilling to catch a cheating kid than to watch India win a India-Pak closely contested cricket match (Both I do rarely).
Catching the child sends a correct message to all students --aka Charles Augustus Milverton style - the great blackmailer in Sherlock Holmes story - who ruined reputations who refused to pay up.
Here the reputaions of little kids are NOT at stake - their personality is.
Just like Yukteshwar Giri - the resolutr Guru of Yoganand Paramhansa (writer of "autobiography of a Yogi") used to routinely point out painful personality traits --to remove the Ego and impove habits --similarly catching a cheat improves all.
Nowadays the teenaged kids have become very clever - and those with powerful parents can become belliegerant as well -unless caught red-handed. Parents no longer accept the teachr's word as Gospel truth .
So I sit at the classes' camera's monitor and also at the windows behind the examinees - and have coolly captured some seasoned rogues.
Ofcourse we try to seat all the rogues in one classroom.
I myelf have never cheated in any exam -so far -- and I give the credit to the school where I studied and the college too -- which had very strict invigilation and swift punishment (perhaps their legal system and political contacts outweighd those of parents of errant pupils)
Thus whatever marks are present on my CV - are truth -- I'm not confused by them. I know where I made mistakes , my CV shows it. Thus I try to improve.
But take the case of a female classmate of mine at MBA - who was a regualr cheat and at the top of the class -her father was reported to have amassed great wealth disproportionate to his govt salary.
Though she was friendly. I was always wary of her -though polite---- cheats cheat everyone!!
While taking the GRE , TOEFL and TSE exams I was saddened to note that India and other South Asians countries were singled out for strict Identification checks --only Passport --becos of prevelant cheating in our country.
Some days back a news-report showed Bihar Govt trying to improve exam invigilation - with proper police protection at exam venues. Even the parents created a riot to oppose the move.
Perhaps they feared that those in other exam centres would be able to cheat --and win in the competitive stakes , or that those who have already cheated in past and got more marks would get the govt jobs.
But I can tell you that in arranged marriages - Bihar girls lose out -who knows how she passed? Who knows what she will teach her kids?
On the other hand, many of my Bihari friends have married after prolonged aqaintance with their mates - who came to know them first-hand.
I, who has never cheated (except once -while I kept the open book on the tablewhile the class was progressing in teacher's absence -and the adm staff feller who ventured in was effusive and whining that pl. do not do it so openly --I had thought that this was only classwork. That feller's behavious suggests the more confident and audacious u r at cheating -- the more the invigilator is afraid of u and ur possible contacts) is forced to find plausible solutions to my problems -- trying to go to the US univs - a very hard way is one of them -- But I don't think I'm losing anything by it.
Am I?
Umesh
