Bhupen Hazarika's joining the BJP reflects couple of things: Basically to most of his fans the issue is "Bhupen Hazarika" joined BJP and not BH joined "BJP".
Many of his fans are disappointed I think probably they were putting BH in higher alter and now disappointed to see his identity of a common man. . To them I think he lowered himself. To BH it is probably a balancing act. Whether he will pamper to his fans or he will take the 'protection' and 'warm feeling' by flowing with the main stream. Whatever it is, my obseravation is that when he said that "...after I saw Hindutva being diluted to Vedantism" BH exposes himself and shows that he simply knows nothing about Hindutva and nothing about Vedantaism.. He is also exposing himself when he says that "Also, joining the BJP will help me do something for the North-East." This coming from a guy who did nothing about the NE all his life!!!! His fans will get a big laugh. But he will gain some new political 'hindutva' fans. I say hobo diok.
