This is what I read in the Assam Tribune -  "So what has made Bhupen Hazarika join the rough and tumble of electoral politics at this stage in life?
His critics, particularly those in the rival Congress camp, see this as an act of opportunism. His fans would however, like to overlook it as an aberration in an otherwise illustrious career studded with artistic accomplishments, little realising that this is not Hazarika's first brush with politics.
"In 1967, I was elected to the Assam legislative assembly as an independent candidate," the octogenarian informs. "I had dreams of setting up a national art gallery, a film school and a Natyashala to preserve the theatre tradition of the north-east. But within two years, the Indo-Pakistan war broke out."

Now I have question to netters from Assam. Did Dr Hazarika talk about this agenda during his campaign? The answer will enlighten those of us living abroad whether Dr. Hazarika is re-entering politics with a public cause in mind.
Thanks,
Dilip Deka, Houston
